85 - Five Take.. Velvet

This week we decided on velvet as our Five Take. As always, check out how the other gals wore their's.

I wore this green velvet dress from Asos Curve, which I picked up around Christmas in the sale. I like the velvet skirt, but not so much the t-shirt top, so I paired it with a closed cardigan. I think it would also look awesome with an over-sized cropped black top or sweater too.

I'm sorry it's a pretty boring outfit! It's the only piece of velvet I own though.. A black velvet mini skirt would be amazing... I'll have to keep my eye out.

Anyway, hope you are all well! Back to school today and again, crazy, crazy busy!

84 - A few OOTDs

Just a couple of outfits from the past couple of days. The first one I wore out on Friday night when Fred and I went out for dinner, drinks, and pool with a couple of good friends. The second outfit is from yesterday when we went to a birthday lunch for Fred's dad.

Dress - Asos Curve, Cardigan - George (at Walmart), Leggings - New Look Inspire; Boots - Evans; Necklace and earrings - H&M; Clutch - thrifted.

Top - New Look Inspire; Cardigan - George (at Walmart); Skirt - ?; Tights - We Love Colours; Shoes and jacket - Evans

You can't see it very well, but the purple and white top is the cutest top ever. It has ruffles down the front cut on the bias so they move so beautifully!

83 - Five Take... Peter Pan Collars!

My prolonged absence from the blogging world makes me so sad. This semester at school has been crazy - not only do I have a billion things to do and read each week but outside activities have also been nuts lately. There's so much going on, but I'll tell you about them when they come to be!

Anyway, here's my Five Take for this week. I am so sorry girls for missing the last two weeks, I feel awful. I promise to try my best from now on to get them up each week! <3 As always, check out NicoleClaire and Beth for their take on the challenge. Also, Valerie from Blog to Be Alive has recently joined us, as Ms. Loaf unfortunately had to drop out. So this week, Claire chose peter pan collars. I have the black and white Asos Curve dress that everyone and their auntie has, so I decided to mix it up a little with this polkadot cardigan.

Dress - Asos Curve; Cardigan - New Look Inspire; Tights - We Love Colors; Shoes - Payless; Hairband - F21

I have a few outfits to post from the last few days so stay tuned!

82 - Not Dead Yet

...despite what nature keeps throwing at me... ie. piles of snow. I did emerge this afternoon, and this is what I wore to my one class. I wouldn't have left the house really, but I had to do a presentation for my art history class.

Cardigan and top - F21+; Skirt - H&M (thrifted); Leggings - Joe Fresh; Boots - Evans; Necklace - Aldo.

Pretty much everything is reworked, except the top, which I just got from F21+ because it is a good staple..

Also, please excuse my freezer just chilling out in the background. I'll do nice pictures again someday...

This outfit would look so much better with flats, and also without the huge coat and scarf and gloves that I had to cover it up with.

WINTER UGHH.

81 - Where Are You, Summer?

It must be the three feet of snow on the ground outside, or the one that is on its way tonight, but I cannot stop dreaming about summer and all that it brings with it - dresses and flats without layers of tights and leggings, drinking on the balcony at 8pm while it's still light, lazy Sunday drives to have picnics, relaxing without the guilt of neglecting schoolwork, music festivals, BBQing, cocktails, cocktails, cocktails...

I keep planning my summer wardrobe in my head - flowy maxi dresses, cute denim sundresses, sheer over-shirts, sandals, towering Mary Janes, wide brimmed floppy hats - heaven. Here's an idea of what I want to wear over the summer..

DENIM SUNDRESSES

MAXI DRESSES

Asos Curve (S/S10, gone from the site now, but I got my hands on one a few weeks ago and I positively adore it).

SHEER SHIRTS

SHOES & ACCESSORIES

Forever 21 (yes, I am obsessed)

Please summer, come quickly!

80 - Dorothy Perkins Love

Dorothy Perkins have become such a favourite of mine recently. Their new dresses are gorgeous, so playing around with Polyvore, I used three of my favourites to style three different summer looks. I can't wait until its summer again!

Now, if only someone would take pity on a snowed-in young woman dreaming of summer and buy me these lovely dresses...

79 - Conference

I'm sure you've all heard me discuss my recent trip to a Women's and Gender Studies conference, so I just thought I'd discuss it a little more. I am worried this is a lot of personal information... but whatever.

Five of us (four current Women's Studies students, and one graduate), along with our professor, travelled to the University of Prince Edward Island early last Friday to attend the student centred conference.. It was a two-day conference and all five of us presented papers, all focusing on different themes.

As I mentioned mine was about using self-made media (blogs, zines, etc.) as tools to subvert patriarchal cultural norms regarding our bodies and spreading ideas of fat activism. I'll post my paper below (trusting that no one will steal it/ plagiarize it, haha - be nice! A lot of the info won't be new to a lot of you, but it was to many others there, seeing as fat activism is a very current issue. I am planning to extend this paper for my super long thesis next year, and will look at fat in a much more detailed way. I am a history student primarily so I will concentrate on how conceptions of fat have changed since the Industrial Revolution, and also look at the ways it intersects with race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, political issues like neoliberalism, and issues surrounding morality. So this is a very simple and introductory essay into some issues in fat activism but obviously is the tip of the iceberg!

Here we all are at the conference, posing with homemade 'this is what a feminist looks like' signs! Top to bottom - Rachel (our prof), Ellen, Holly, Ben, Me, Kathleen. I love these guys :)

It was an amazing experience, and I would strongly recommend if you ever get the chance to present or attend a conference about something that interests you to do it! It was scary but totally worth it, even if just for all the free food and wine!

We are also featured in our local newspaper, our campus newspaper, and our school's website - http://stfx.ca/news/view/3362/. Holly and I even got shout-outs in two of our classes the past few days! Crazy business.
